Emery Oleochemicals expands operations in Ohio

Emery Oleochemicals expanded its technical development centre (TDC) in Cincinnati, Ohio, with the opening of a new application lab for its green polymer additives (GPA) business. 

Emery is a producer of natural-based chemicals and a manufacturer of oleochemicals in North America.

The new application lab will support Emery's green polymer additives business that offers renewable products for a wide range of industries such as automotive, electronics, packaging, building and construction.

Grace buys BASF polyolefin catalysts business

WR Grace completed the acquisition of German chemical company BASF's Polyolefin Catalysts business for an undisclosed amount.

As part of the deal, Grace will now completely own LYNX high-activity polyethylene (PE) catalyst technologies, which are used in slurry processes for the production of high-density PE (HDPE) resins, such as bimodal film and pipe.

The deal also included the LYNX polypropylene (PP) catalyst technologies that are used in PP processing technologies, including slurry, bulk loop, stirred gas, fluid gas, and stirred bulk.

Saudi Aramco and SABIC to conduct feasibility study for oil-to-chemicals complex

Saudi Aramco and Saudi Arabian Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) entered a heads of agreement (HoA) to conduct a feasibility study to develop a crude oil-to-chemicals complex in Saudi Arabia.

If the study reaches a positive conclusion, the agreement will help the companies establish a joint venture.

Using improved refining technology, the crude oil-to-chemicals process would feature new configurations with established conversion technologies.

AkzoNobel acquires Egypt’s powder coatings venture

AkzoNobel acquired a 100% stake in Egypt's Akzo Nobel Powder Coatings.

The Dutch firm has increased its stake from 60% to 100%, as part of its accelerated growth strategy for the Egypt and North African region.

The deal's financial details have not yet been disclosed.

Ineos to increase EtAc production at manufacturing site in Hull, UK

Ineos Oxide is expanding its Hull manufacturing facility in the UK to boost production of ethyl acetate (EtAc) by 100,000t a year.

The additional capacity is expected to be available by the end of next year.

EtAc is used in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, inks, and flexible packaging.

WorleyParsons gains contract from chemical firm LyondellBasell

WorleyParsons secured an integrated project management team (IPMT) contract from LyondellBasell, a global chemical and refining company.

LyondellBasell plans to construct a propylene oxide and tertiary butyl alcohol (PO/TBA) plant in Channelview and Pasadena, Texas.

The PO/TBA project in Texas is the largest single capital development project taken up by LyondellBasell, with an annual capacity of one billion pounds of PO and two billion pounds of TBA.

Solvay and Suzano Papel e Celulose to build hydrogen peroxide plant in Brazil

Solvay and affiliate Peroxidos do Brasil agreed to build an integrated hydrogen peroxide production plant at Suzano Papel e Celulose's pulp mill site in Brazil.

The proposed facility in Imperatriz city in the Brazilian state of Maranhão will use Solvay's myH2O2 technology that has been developed for installation at remote customer premises.

Under the terms, Suzano will deliver hydrogen feed-stock, utilities and site services for the facility.

Sumitomo Chemical to build new production facility in Chiba

Sumitomo Chemical planned to build a new manufacturing facility at Chiba Works in Ichihara City for producing polyethersulfone (PES), a high-performance engineering plastic.

The new facility will have the capacity to produce approximately 3,000t of PES per annum. With commercial-scale production scheduled to start from 2018, the company's combined total PES capacity is expected to increase twofold.

PES is a thermoplastic resin with excellent heat, hot water, and flame resistance properties, as well as dimensional stability.
